Kavya Raj
Her mother taught her to sew. She wants to teach a hundred more.
Her story
Kavya's mother was a school tailor — she stitched uniforms for the government school in their village in Kancheepuram district for twenty-two years. She taught Kavya on weekends. By the time Kavya was in college, she could construct a full churidar from scratch. After her mother passed away, the machine sat silent for two years.
Moving to Chennai for work, Kavya took a data entry job but spent evenings altering clothes for colleagues. She realised she was better at stitching than at spreadsheets. A colleague shared GiftASkill with her after seeing the poster at a Metro station.
Kavya's long-term ambition is not just to stitch but to teach — she wants to eventually run a small training centre in her neighbourhood, passing on what her mother gave her. The Skillinabox certification is her first credential. Fund her, and you fund the next generation of women she will train.
