Meena Kumari

Meena grew up in a jhuggi cluster near Laxmi Nagar, the eldest of four sisters. She started working as a domestic helper at sixteen to pay for her sisters' schooling. For eleven years, she cleaned homes, cooked for other families, and put away every spare rupee she could. At twenty-seven, she decided it was finally her turn.

She enrolled herself in a basic beauty course at a private institute but dropped out after two months — the timing clashed with her work schedule and the institute offered no flexibility.
